The Serama
SORRY, local sales only --we are not NPIP certified for shipping. The little bird with the big personality American and Traditional Seramas are clever, calm, people-loving chickens that grasp your heart in a way few other chickens can. They bond deeply to their people, and love petting and attention almost as much as they love food! They are fun to show and great with children. They are the smallest of chicken breeds, which means they eat and excrete far less than larger birds. They are happy free-roaming or caged, and can easily live in rabbit cages or hutches. Some people keep them as house pets and let them roam wearing chicken diapers! They lay adorable peewee sized eggs and are excellent mothers. The very smallest of the chicken breeds, Seramas can weigh as little as 6 ounces as adults (or even less!) or as much as 19.2 oz. Most healthy Seramas are just under a pound. Traditional Serama do not breed true to color, and chicks from a given pair can be any of a spectrum of mostly unnamable patterns. Traditional Seramas are trained to strut their stuff on a small table top, where they are judged for type, personality, performance, and individual attributes. American Seramas are bred for specific color as well as type and personality, and can be shown in cage or tabletop. They can learn their names and be clicker trained to do tricks! The breed is believed to originate from a mixture of Red Jungle Fowl, the genetically diverse Common Malaysian Village Bantam, and the Japanese Bantam. Jerry Schexnayder imported the Serama chicken directly from their native Malaysia in 2001. Since then, Seramas have exploded in popularity. There are many informative groups on Facebook to get the beginner started in showing. Breeding and showing Seramas is an ideal space-friendly backyard project for 4-H or FFA.
