Talkative and personable chocolate egg layers
Marans are best known for their large, chocolate brown eggs. The breed is always spelled with the final "s"; a single bird is not a Maran! We love them because they are a fluffy armful of docile friendly bird. They follow us around prattling about this and that and relating exciting stories in incomprehensible chicken language. They are a solid chicken with attractively feathered legs and a broad body. They can be used for meat or eggs. The black copper rooster is a "wow" bird, iridescent black with copper-penny hackles and saddle. The hens have varying degree of copper encircling the neck. Lavenders are purple-gray color. Our lavender roosters are Isabel- they have pale blond hackles and saddles over blue-grey body feathering.
Cock….…..8 lbs Hen……6 1/2 lbs
Cockerel….7lbs Pullet…..5 1/2 lbs
The Marans breed originated in France, in marshy areas close to the Atlantic coast. They are gaining popularity in the USA. The lavender (self blue) is a new variety: as such the egg color can be lighter than the coveted chocolate brown. We are breeding ours to black coppers to darken the egg color.
